Anyone who has lived abroad for an indefinite amount of time, is familiar with the excitement and fear it entails.

Moving to a foreign country is a huge challenge and requires courage, resilience and adaptability to a whole new kind of life.

It gets even more challenging if you must learn a new language, since we are all aware of how communication influences our social and everyday life.

Italy is a complex country, with a complicated bureaucracy and a very solid cultural identity. Expats moving to Italy may experience so called “culture shocks”, and will have to get used to different habits and routines.

Despite the excitement and curiosity, expatriates could experience something called “expat blues”: a recurring feeling of loneliness and homesickness.

Obviously, every county in the world is different and has its own peculiarities. So, an expat’s concrete struggles in Dubai may be different than those experienced in Rome.

Social life is obviously one of the main aspects involved in moving to a foreign country. The need to recreate a group of friends suddenly emerges and at the same time you deal with the fact that you are leaving your significant others behind.

It takes time to process what you are leaving and to learn how to embrace a new home away from your own.

Mental healthcare is fundamental while facing such a lifechanging event, but it can be hard to find an English-speaking therapist in the country you are moving to.

Language barriers are always tough to face but they are especially insidious in the healthcare system.
